The Mara Nomads of Tanzania have a life expectancy of less than 56 years. Cholera, Dysentery, Malaria are killers. Lack of clean water for cooking, drinking and other daily needs sees the Manila village, tens of miles west of Lake Victoria, suffering such during dry season, when Mara women and children face a daily 10 mile walk, each way, nearly 8 hours, youngest on their backs, just to secure 5 gallons of water for their family. Consider: US Marines make a 10 mile hike with 50 lb. packs, but have no 10 mile warm-up. 5 gallons of water weighs 41.78 pounds, and no MREs or mess tent await the Mara women at day’s end. Their lifestyle is almost incomprehensible to us, yet we can understand that when they get home? They still have to cook. No $130 Marine boots either. Cheap import plastic jellies are the common shoe. Their water is carried in old paint buckets. They are a rainbow bucket parade.
Early death, often of babies and toddlers, is a horrid but frequent part of life, but a water tower on Lake Victoria, powered by solar panels on this equator split country will deliver not only clean water to raise these people above hard, short lives and subsistence farming, but also introduce electricity to them, which today they experience but infrequently with battery operated devices such as short wave radios.
